In a stunning testament to the resilience of nature, the reintroduction of bison to Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert has sparked a cascade of ecological rejuvenation. For over two centuries, the absence of these 'landscape architects' left the ecosystem unbalanced, with unchecked grass growth, compacted soil, and increased fire risks. However, since August 2025, when the first bison were reintroduced, followed by 44 more, the landscape has begun to heal. Bison activities such as soil aeration through their hooves, seed dispersal via their fur, and nutrient cycling from their manure have initiated a revival of plant life and a reduction in wildfire risks. This has attracted other wildlife back to the area, including pumas and lynxes, demonstrating the bison's critical role in maintaining ecological balance.

The Cuatrociénegas nature reserve, managed by Fundación Pro Cuatrociénegas, Coahuila’s Museo del Desierto, and the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, serves as the epicenter for this rewilding initiative.
