In plain language

The transition to retirement can be challenging, especially for employees with strong ties to their workplace. This study explored how structured coping strategy training can enhance happiness among retirees from Indonesian state-owned enterprises. Participants were divided into two groups, with one receiving training in problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies, such as laughter and relaxation techniques.

The study found that those who underwent this training reported a significant and lasting increase in happiness, as measured by the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Qualitative data further revealed improvements in emotional regulation, meaning-making, and social connectedness, suggesting that such programs can support positive aging.

Key findings

  • Coping strategy training significantly increased happiness among retirees.
  • The increase in happiness was sustained over a three-month follow-up period.
  • Participants showed improved emotional regulation and meaning-making.
  • Social connectedness and engagement in daily activities were enhanced.
  • The intervention included both problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies.
